KUALA LUMPUR,Nov 23: The conditional movement control order (CMCO) in several states could last until the end of the year if the number of Covid-19 cases remains high, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Mohd Redzuan Yusof said today.
He said preventive measures are being conducted to prevent and reduce the number of cases to a minimum and, if possible, to zero.
“The CMCO was implemented based on risk assessments conducted by the health ministry for every area. This takes into account the number of cases and the infection rate in a locality.
“The government will study the need to implement the CMCO until the end of the year if there’s a rise in the number of cases,” he told the Dewan Rakyat during his ministerial reply on the 2021 budget.
Redzuan said Putrajaya is looking at updating and improving the SOPs to address the people’s needs.
“The MCO is imposed under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1998 (Act 342). Under this act, SOPs have been issued to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“However, the government always takes note of the suffering the people go through in facing the economic downturn caused by the pandemic,” he said.
Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Sabah and Labuan are currently under the CMCO, while the partial lockdown in Kedah, Melaka, Terengganu and Johor was lifted recently, except for a few districts.
